What really does not make a lick of sense. How many startions are there? Where are they? What percentage of the Earth is not covered? And for the supposed small area covered how many thousands of square miles is covered by each GHCN? A global temp based upon GHCN is a bovine crap shoot no matter how anyone masturbates the numbers.

appinsys.com /GlobalWarming/GW_Part3_GlobalTempMeasure.htm

Gives an analysis of NOAA stations.
The Earth Surface is 197 million square miles divided by 3846 give 51220 square miles per station.
Continental USA is 3,119,884.69 square miles divided by 1050 gives 2971 square miles per station
226 times 226 = 51076 But the map shows distribution is wildly different.

54 times 54 = 2926. Obviously even in the USA huge areas are not instrumented. Only Satellites can give anything approaching reality in a global temperature measurement.
