, “the life of a newborn is of less value than the life of a pig, a dog, or a chimpanzee.”

I didn't check to see if this is an accurate quote, but I will address some of the essence of which you write.

I grew up on a farm. My father used to define a weed as a plant growing in the wrong place. We took weeds out of the garden. Now I am sure you and Brumar will want to be quick to jump on the word "weeds" and try to imply that I think fetus are weeds and that is a negative association, but this is an accurate quote and I don't intend to let my understanding of ideas get sidetracked by words, which are after all the servants of ideas.

Actually, I have no idea who Pete Singer is, I formulated my response under my misinterpretation of words that you referred to Pete Seeger, the singer.

Still, to address the central subject. I think there is value is dogs, and pigs, and chimpanzees. There is a fundamental greatness to the diversity of life on this planet. When there are too many humans on the planet then there is less resources available for many many forms of life that haven't yet gone extinct. I think that there is more value to the creatures that are being driven to extinction than to another human birth out of the billions. This is especially so when we are writing of abortion and the fact the birth is not wanted by the mother. There may be some who believe that an unwanted child is just another Steve Jobs to be born, but in reality nearly all of the unwanted births result in an abused and damaged individual who costs society ten times over in prison costs, or murders, or just bitter behavior from their bringup which is neglected at best and horribly disturbed at it's worst. There are more than enough wanted human births. Eventually it will not just be humans causing the extinction of chimps and dogs and pigs to take their resources, it will be humans against humans as if there isn't already enough of that too.

Every birth on this planet should be welcomed by the mother. It's not your nor my place to force the issue.
