Yes, that controversy probably won't go away any time soon. Drug companies are doing something which looks like gouging, or maybe it is gouging. The drug companies have drugs which cost a few pennies a dose and they're going into an environment where many people are suffering...then the drug companies hold the drug over those who are suffering and take them for all they're worth. It seems inhumane to withhold drugs from people who need them until those people pay up.

Practically, though, nobody likes to work for free. It would be hard to find a group of doctors and researchers all willing to do a full time research job for free in order to develop a needed drug. Doctors and researchers have school loans, mortgages and sometimes even prescription drugs for which they need to pay and often can't even afford to work for free even if they are highly altruistic.
