With those first ads, there is no way they were meant to sell one computer -- they were clearly "image" ads. Anyone who buys an ad agency's pitch to do "image" ads hasn't been around the block many times and that is probably true if you look at the CEO's age. He wasted a few million right there.

Their ad campaigns should explicitly mention Dell - like "Who was rated first in tech support and customer service in 1994, 1995 and 1996? DELL computer! (if they were) Who is rated first in 1997? MICRON - That computer company in Idaho that wins all the awards for making the best and fastest computers! Micron is now the leader in customer service, too! To order your new award winning Micron computer, call _______________." And they should have the name Micron and the phone number burned in throughout the entire commercial.

1. Dell is recognized and Dell is the leader. Tie yourself to them.
2. Say how you have started beating Dell at its own game.
3. Keep your name and phone number up every second.
4. Tell the public you are a U.S. company - Micron sounds like some Taiwanese computer manufacturer's name.
