If by "you don't have to" you mean that Medicare does not mandate it, you are correct. But that's not the point. Medicare so dominates the market and the health care environment that there isn't any practical alternative so, effectively, you "have to." To say "you don't have to" take Medicare B is like saying you don't have to leave your house to get medical care or you don't have to have a government-issued ID. Try living life otherwise..
The point is that those whining about Medicare do have the options they dream about.....to buy their own policy. Surely there are like minded individuals chafing at the bit to sell insurance independent of big government. But when your love of free enterprise leaves you short of policies better or even equal to Medicare, minds change rapidly..... in short, let the whiners put their money where their mouth is....... You can live life otherwise, as you say.
In the meantime, accept your Medicare behind your back....

Which is why, unless you are well up in the one-percenter ranks, you have to have Medicare.
So who's going to all those doctors that are not accepting medicare????
