I can remember a particular event sometime around 1969. The older sister of a girl I knew from band class disappeared. She was just gone from school, gone from the town. Disappeared! There was a big hush over it. A few weeks later the girl I knew told the band director she had to miss a show that weekend (and the band was small enough that that usually required the various musical parts be re-jiggered among the chairs). After practice I asked her what was up. She told me her family was going to visit her sister. She was somewhere near Waco and that's an all day drive. Eventually the words just poured out of her. She explained that her sister told her parents she was pregnant. Her parents asked their church for advice and within days a stern couple arrived and gathered the parents in the living room and insisted they had to act now or she would go to hell, or someone would find out and nobody would talk to them, or the dog would get warts. However they would take the daughter to the land of unicorns and candy. They were all scared (except the stern couple) and given papers to sign, and this girl's sister was driven away with a suitcase and a tear in her eye. That family was never the same again. The baby-daddy, I learned later, was not the girls boyfriend and it involved some sort of argument with the boyfriend and rebound sex. The baby-daddy had no part in the intervention that led to the baby grab. Now you might be wondering what this has to do with Roe v Wade. There was another event a few years ago. I was talking to a friend of mine and asked about his family. His daughter had just given birth. He was part proud grampa, but also part exasperated that his daughter wasn't married and it was going to be this problem after that to solve and he didn't think the baby daddy was going to be able to pay child support. It was a big change in their life. What it wasn't however was an issue of shame, or that their family had to hide from the world. Those days are over thanks to Roe V Wade. There are still plenty of girls who get pregnant at a time they just can't face having a baby, and maybe they are ashamed, but they are no longer forced into one option. They have a choice. The babies that are born by those who chose to have the baby tend to have a support system and it is better for all. I'm sure I have other friends with daughters who got pregnant but got abortions. I don't really know because they don't have to tell me, and it's not really my business anyway. This country is a much better place now and Roe v Wade is a major reason it is better.
