the party of shutdowns and THE STUPID
Obama Challenges GOP Congressmen To Cut The Chit And Do Their Jobs October 4, 2015Deborah Montesano US Republish Reprint
President Obama is tired of the GOP’s Chit when it comes to approving a serious budget. At a news conference Friday, the president said:
“I will not sign another shortsighted spending bill.
“Congress has to do its job. We can’t flirt with another shutdown.” GOP CONGRESSMEN ARE FULL OF … GIMMICKS
And, ok, he didn’t call it “Chit” — even though that’s what it is — but labeled the Congressional Republicans’ latest move a “gimmick.” He was referring to the budget resolution that they sent to him, and that he signed, two days before — which funds the government just until Dec. 11th.
The GOP likes to keep the country in a state of perpetual crisis so that they can portray the administration as a failing one. They’ve made such drastic cuts to spending while Obama has been in the White House that the economy has had to fight its way back to health in spite of them.
The President said:
“We cannot cut our way to prosperity.” But the only prosperity the GOP is interested in is that of their special interest buddies and the lining of the lawmakers’ own pockets. While Democrats are seeking increases in a variety of essentials like education, the building and repair of infrastructure, and defense, Republicans only want to increase military spending and continue cutting everything else. And they don’t think the American public can see through that.
IT’S UP TO JOHN BOEHNER TO RESPOND
The short-term resolution that was just signed bought a little time — ten weeks, to be exact — during which a two-year budget proposal can, and should be, worked out. Retiring Speaker of the House John Boehner said he wants to “clean up the barn” for his successor in October — his last month on the job. Great. Put up or shut up, then, because this is the end of the road for conservative shenanigans.
If the government shuts down, again, the American public will clearly know who to blame — and that’s the guys who forced a shutdown last time. GOP, we’re looking at you, whether you think so or not!
We don’t actually have until December 11th for Congress to “do its job.” On a related issue, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sent lawmakers a letter Thursday to let them know that, unless the debt limit is raised, the country will run out of money on Nov. 5th. That’s much earlier than expected due to factors like falling tax revenues. Lew wrote:
“Without sufficient cash, it would be impossible for the United States of America to meet all its obligations for the first time in our history.” So there you go, Boehner. You have a choice about the legacy you leave when you ride into the sunset on Oct. 31. You can let the country slide into default, with all the drastic consequences for the economy, or you can compromise — oh, horror of all horrors — with Democrats and set America on a path of sounder, healthier fiscal policy.
Your choice, Boehner. How do you want to be remembered? President Obama has drawn his line in the sand, to pull the nation back from the brink on which it’s been teetering for a very long time. You can either get in the harness and help him pull through working out a deal — which is the way government is supposed to work — or you can give the country a swift kick be known as the man who sent it crashing over the edge. __________________ |
