It was an upper-level low fueled by the jet stream. It's a -5 standard deviation cold-core low. Check out plot below. This happens as the atmosphere is cooling. It's not warming any more; we're heading towards winter in the Northern Hemisphere. This event is a result of rapid cooling.

Same thing in Southern France. It's all related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillaton pattern; the cooling in the north Atlantic. These southern tracking lows are classic example. Another one will hit Texas in the next 5 days (in Southern Cal in map below). Blurting out that it's from warming is moronic.

Check out the tropopause pressure map. Holy cow! Global warming would decrease the tropopause pressure, since warming creates a less-dense atmosphere. The low over SE U.S. has sucked down the tropopause to over 500-mb. Holy shit! That's a cold core low. How does global warming enhance that?
