There is no evidence that they are any more common.

As for Sandy it was a category 3 storm. Powerful but not usually so. It had a big impact because it hit the most populated part of the United States. But many other Atlantic Hurricanes have been deadlier, with the deadliest being the Great Hurricane of 1780, and the most deaths in the US being from Galveston in 1900, and the 2nd deadliest in the US being the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane
