My father was born in either 1927 or 1928 depending on who you talk to. I was told he went to enlist as a Merchant Marine during WW2 and lied about his age so he could get the job. He was a Merchant Marine all his life and finally earned his Captain's Papers at the age of 64. Unfortunately he died from Colo/Rectal cancer at the age of 66.
