Lucent Technologies to supply first nationwide cellular digital packet data (CDPD) system in China for country's backbone data network

BEIJING, CHINA - Lucent Technologies today announced a US$10 million contract to supply a new dedicated wireless data network to be operated by China Telecom. The system will be the first nationwide network in China to employ a technology called Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD).

The first commercial CDPD system in China will be installed in the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication's data network-the China Radio Data Network. The network includes three mobile data intermediate systems(MDIS) in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Expansion to other cities is currently under discussion and it is expected that most cities in China will have access to CDPD service in the near future.

"We are delighted to have been part of China's successful trial of CDPD technology and to work with our partners here in China to introduce the system to this market," said Douglas Kirkpatrick, vice president, Network Wireless Systems, Lucent Technologies (China). "The CDPD system is just one example of the many wireless products available from Lucent. We will continue to work hard to bring the best of Lucent technologies to our customers in China."

CDPD is opening a whole new era in wireless communications: the data era. It is expected that the volume of data transmitted over wireless networks may soon exceed the amount of voice traffic. CDPD can make our day-to-day life more convenient by adding mobility to virtually any business that has a mobile work force. For example, physicians on an emergency medical call can use wireless data to receive a patient's medical record at the site of the emergency, and transmit information while en route to a hospital - or taxi drivers can be advised on the best travel routes and obtain credit card verifications right from their taxi.

I know the $10 million to LU is equivalent to someone giving one of us a shiny new nickel, but hopefully this opens doors for expansion of their wireless communications services into other cities throughout China as well.
