An argument can be made that it is extreme. But an argument can also be made that it just doesn't matter.

Out of all the murders in 2011, 323 were committed with rifles and while FBI doesn't track the type of rifle, I can guarantee you that most of those murders were with ordinary hunting rifles. Meanwhile:

Handguns 6,220
Shotguns 356
Other guns 1,684
Knives 1,694
Blunt Objects 496
Hands & Feet 726
and so on.

In fact, of all the major categories of murder weapons, "rifles" are the least often used, and that encompasses all rifles not just assault rifles. So, I think it would be fair to say that assault rifles just aren't the problem.

If you want to control murders you're not going to do it by controlling the weapons.

We tried to control drinking with Prohibition. Drugs with the War on Drugs. Prostitution by jailing whores. Untaxed cigarettes. Geez, the list really is almost endless.

AND NONE OF THESE SUPPLY RESTRICTIONS HAS EVER WORKED.

You cannot control black markets by limiting supply if the demand is substantial. Not going to happen. What it WILL do is create a misdirection that causes people to lose focus on the heart of the problem.

If it were up to me I would solve it with education, requiring a k-12 curriculum that taught people how to act.
