So in effect they are stating that the propensity to disrespect reality and the mind directly relates to the disrespect for moral values. No wonder such a high proportion of religious people are being looked after as wards of the state in various prisons...

Religion naturally corrupts morals--as Paine and Huxley rightly observe.

Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what one does not believe. T. H. Huxley's formulation was

The foundation of morality is to ... give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibilities of knowledge.
