I believe it is because the left perceives it to be the case that if it is genetic, it is not a mere "illness" that can be "cured". And in ancient times, homos were believed to be mentally ill.
Even if it's a choice, it can be declassified as an "illness." Just say that people can choose whether to be homo or hetero.

There was a recent survey in the UK where half of all young people say they might be a "little homosexual": independent.co.uk

How can that be, if homosexuality is "genetic"? Does that mean half of all youngsters in UK somehow got the "gay gene"?

I'll wait for Alighieri's answer before saying what I think.
