It matters significantly to gay people, since over the years they have considered as deviants or immoral and deprived of rights others enjoy.

I still don't think the matter over "choice" has to have any weight on whether they are considered "deviants or immoral." Society can accept the gay lifestyle without proving one way or another whether it was a "choice" to begin with. If it doesn't hurt anyone else, why deprive them of rights?

But I get your point on how offensive Ben Carson's remarks can be. It's not like most gay people were put into a situation where the only sex they could have is with people of the same gender.
