Collapse of Complex Societies, by Tainter is a good intro. Call it an executive summary. Though, it's really a bare bones outline. If you want to put flesh on the bones? Next would be either The Fall of the Roman Empire, by Heather; The Hundred Years War, by Stewart; or Modern Times, by Johnson.

The last is the longest, but by far the best when it comes to explaining how the decline of America and Europe since 1900 has unfolded. Slowly, at first, picking up pace until we can only characterize it as a straight down plunge, in recent years.
