Fla. Woman Arrested for Periscoping While Driving Drunk
By Don Reisinger October 13, 2015

Concerned Periscopers alerted police that 23-year-old Whitney Marie Beall was driving drunk and livestreaming.

Drinking and driving is terrible. But using Periscope to broadcast your drinking and driving is terrible—and dumb. A Florida woman was arrested on Saturday after she used Periscope while driving. During the video, the woman can be heard saying that she's "drunk," Lakeland Police spokesman Sgt. Gary Gross told 10 News in Tampa Bay. Viewers asked her to stop driving, but also called 911. Police officers watched the live video stream for clues of where she was and eventually found her.

Periscope, which is owned by Twitter, has become one of the Web's biggest phenomenons. The technology allows users to live-stream video to Twitter followers, who can respond to what they're watching. It's generally best to conduct a Periscope, however, when you're not behind the wheel and/or intoxicated.

In a blog post, Lakeland Police Department officers said that when they pulled 23-year-old Whitney Marie Beall over, "they smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Beall, her speech was slow; her eyes were bloodshot and glossy."

Beall failed a field sobriety test and was arrested and charged with DUI.

Looking ahead, Lakeland PD told 10 News that it learned a valuable lesson from the incident and would begin training officers on how to use Periscope to identify potential crimes.
