creatures that don't exist in the billions. As I wrote, changes accumulate more slowly in smaller populations. It's easy to check out personally because humans are one of the groups that is expanding and all sorts of changes are accumulating. There are people alive and reproducing with conditions which would have been fatal not long ago. In many cases the people involved have a favorable trait, like money or great insurance, which allows other traits to continue to the next generation. Pet dogs are another easy to see example.
