You are not doing things right. Obamacare is perfect for me. Both retired, we can show we only make 30k a year, for a few years, allowing all Americans to pay roughly 45% of our $1,711 monthly premium that we used to pay for from our own pocket. Allows our retirement accounts to just keep compounding.

.......this is exactly the right approach for retirees below 65 who live comfortably but are not independently wealthy. I'd have to make $46K in retirement income not to get a subsidy. I have chosen not to take SS until at least 66. My regular and ROTH IRAs are intact and appreciating. Now, while I could possibly make $46K+ of taxable income with a very risky investment profile, it makes NO SENSE in the current environment . So I limited my investment income to just over $20K and I qualify for a ~ $300/month subsidy...........Combine that with a GOVT set up NOT FOR PROFIT HEALTH CARE COOP (Health Republic of NY)

healthrepublicny.org

whose premiums were set at least 25% below real value, and I could get a Bronze plan for free. However, I chose the Platinum plan with ZERO deductible and pay $210 a month. So I get an effective 59% subsidy.
Now Health Republic went bankrupt just as I predicted on this board many times and next year I will have to find another health care provider. I expect at least a 50% increase in rates. But I have a plan for that also as I always evaluate a situation and then try to make the best of it. This has served me well. The unfortunate ones are those who actually do have to live on say $25+K a year and find that even with a large subsidy can't afford a Platinum (no deductible) plan but can't afford the huge deductible on a Bronze plan should they actually have to use their insurance. FWIW I consumed just under $2K of Health Insurance $$ last year and expect to consume less than $1K this year. My total premiums for the two years will be about $5.2K . I'm not the problem with Health Insurance......the GOVT is..
