Your problem is that you don't realize how stupid you are.

If you bother to think more than a couple of seconds, something should occur to you.

Tides. And they aren't the same everywhere. They are affected by more than just the position of the Sun and the Moon, also. In contained, or mostly contained bodies like the Gulf of Mexico, they can be pretty complex. In open bodies, like the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, they follow a 24 and a half hour cycle. But it the Gulf they are more variable because the size and the shape of the Gulf causes long cycle wave patterns that means you can have a lot of aperiodic cases. Like a small high, pause, another higher high and a drop followed by a high and a low. Other patterns can exist. In addition, winds and currents can affect the local sea level.
