Hurricanes greatly impact human lives. But when looking at the global distribution of heat and momentum, hurricanes play a minor role. The midlatitude storm tracks produce powerful synoptic lows that do most of the redistribution of heat and momentum over thousands and thousands of miles. There are so many "proxies" in the global warming debate, and hurricanes are one of them.

For example, here are the current synoptic systems over the Pacific. Can you spot Hurricane Olaf?
