South Korea Meets Foreign Bankers as Default Looms

South Korea gave foreign bankers a full account of the country's
overseas debt crisis for the first time, hoping to prevent them
from triggering a default. The meeting came as Korea's stock
market, bond market and currency all plunged to record lows when
Standard & Poor's Corp. joined Moody's Investors Service in
slashing the country's credit rating to junk. Investor confidence
in Korea is at rock bottom and foreign exchange continues to flow
out of the country at least as fast as it flows in.

Tuesday's Asian Markets: South Korean Stocks Suffer Record Loss

South Korea's benchmark stock index suffered its biggest one-day
decline ever while stocks on other exchanges across Asia were
mixed. The Korean won fell to a record low 1,961 against the
dollar, pushing other Asian currencies down as well. The Japanese
yen was little changed against the dollar and the Tokyo stock
exchange was closed for a holiday. In Seoul, the benchmark Kospi
index of 775 companies plunged 29.70, or 7.50 percent, to 366.36.
its largest one-day drop on record. The decline came after Moody's
Investors Service and Standard & Poor's lowered the country's
foreign-currency debt rating to junk status. Hong Kong's Hang Seng
Index rose 195.63 points, or 1.9 percent, to 10,368.10 -- snapping
a two-day losing streak.
