Glazed or somebody on one of the other boards was making hay about St. Jean Graphite's press release about applying for a patent for something to do with the superparamagnetism of their nano-graphite. web.tmxmoney.com

They hinted at what they were working on, here: web.tmxmoney.com

It's an interesting development, I suppose, but certainly not one that is unanticipated conceptually. Edge defects (zig-zag and armchair alterations in atomic orientations) in nano-graphite are likely responsible, according to these references that I read some time ago:

It will be interesting to see just what it is that they claim to be new art, suitable for a patent. People have been researching this behaviour for some time. Manner of preparation is an obvious one, but, we'll see. The observed effect is also temperature dependent, so it will be interesting to see what comes of that measurement.

I suspect that the observed phenomena are inherent to highly crystalline hydrothermal graphite, and you can't patent that.
