The US had strong growth in the 50s and 60s, with Eisenhower the only Republican president until '69 (and no Republican congress). Demographics where much more favorable then. In the earliest part of that period you had the continuation of the bounce back from the suppressed private domestic economy that happened in the depression and WWII. In the 60s you had Kennedy, a Democrat, cutting tax rates, a big benefit but not something Democrats are pushing today. Then you had stimulus from war spending and new entitlements and other Domestic spending under Johnson, combined with loose money all creating a short term economic boost, leading to the inflation of the 70s, which was finally reigned in when Reagan was president at the expense of a very severe recession early in his time in office.

There hasn't been a generally Republican economic policy and Democratic economic policy to compare. Kennedy cut taxes, Nixon imposed price controls, both Carter and Reagan cleared out some harmful regulation. No consistent set of policies to compare, and the comparison happens over a small sample size as well. Not really meaningful.
