In this conclusion you are badly mistaken - Putin is there to prop Assad and keep Latakia and Tartus military bases

100% wrong. The EU and their ally, USA, materially supported the Syrian uprising to get rid of Assad because he wouldn't allow a nat gas pipeline from the middle east to pass through Syria to the EU, to compete with Russian gas. Russia doesn't want competition and prefers to have the EU as a captive nat gas client, so it is natural that Putin would protect his turf and his friend, Assad. Now the EU is reaping what it has sown, with 100's of thousands of refugees flooding the EU.....As for the USA, the CIA in Benghazi were most likely murdered by pro Assad Hezbollah hit team, because the CIA was buying arms and ammunition from the late Gaddafi's weapons lockers and shipping them to Syrian rebels via Turkey. Naturally, that has been suppressed in the US media and recently white washed again in the Benghazi hearing that gave Hillary Clinton a clean pass.
