Margaret, Sonny and all: OTOT

Now that the holidays are upon us, I thought I will write a timely post for the benefit of all the posters.
Hangover: Alcohol is converted into acetic acid by the liver, which is passed in the urine . You know what acetic acid is. It is your common vinegar. Easy enough. Not by any stretch of imagination. But there is an intermediate product by name ACETADEHYDE between the alcohol and the acetic acid. Acetaldehyde is also converted into water and CO2 (carbon dioxide, which the lungs exhale.) That acetaldehyde is a trouble maker. A blood acetaldehyde level above 0.5mg/dL is toxic. This acetaldehyde is injurious to retinal cells of the eye.

Things are not as simple as this. A lot more things contribute to hangover. Any dark alcoholic drink including red wine and Cognac contain some METHANOL. Don't throw a fit on this information. Ethanol and methanol are close relatives. Methanol goes through formic acid and acetaldehyde. It takes 5 times longer for the body to get rid of, or process the methanol via formic acid and acetaldehyde. That means it may take at least 4 days to get rid of methanol from the body. This formic acid lowers the Ph of the blood; that is no good for cellular enzymes to function optimally. How do you get rid of Methanol?. Drink more Ethanol ( your drinking alcohol) . And this Ethanol blocks the Methanol going through its intermediate products namely Formic acid and acetaldehyde and gets rid of it in the urine as unchanged Methanol. Neat trick. Body's enzymes like to do the easy thing and that is, handle the alcohol, and get rid of the methanol in the urine.

Body uses glutathione to get rid of the toxic materials from alcohol. That leaves oxygen radicals to cause damage to tissues and cause hangover symptoms. What do you do here? Provide more glutathione to process the alcohol & antioxidants to handle the oxygen radicals. This is where the following remedies come:

1:N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) ( the main component of glutathione)available in health food stores. People take 1 or 2 gms.
2: Eggs: Contains Cysteine (Prairie oysters)
3: Vitamin C (antioxidant and lowers acetadehyde)
4: Vitamin Thiamine (lowers acetaldehyde level)
5: water to correct the dehydrating effects of alcohol intake.
6: sugary foods to counteract low blood sugar levels.

This is not a medical advice. It is for informational purposes only.

Happy Holidays everybody

Paul
