We have a ton of literature on Chris McCandless like that. There are some articles from Alaska that are like "The criminal and bum Chris McCandless"- then there is Krakauer's work (sort of along the lines of "The hero Chris McCandless") and then there are some more even handed articles. The nice thing about the articles is that they aren't political- so you can discuss them without offending anyone. Not that anyone was offended by the Ben discussion. I have a couple of Trump enthusiasts in my class, but no supporters of Ben. Trump, at least in my classes, appeals to a fraction of the white and privileged. No doubt their idea that he's fantastic (even though they know little about him) comes from their parents. My minority students want Obama to run again :-) And yes, they know he can't- but they really, really like him. And he crosses minority lines- my Indian (from India) students like him as much as my Hispanic and black students. Carson isn't even on their radar.
