Well George, actually you will be able to smell the gas as the drill descends by sniffing the mud. But, the only ones doing the sniffing will be the fellows in the trailer unit, all confidential stuff. I am still working on trying to arrange for periodical depth readings and you all will be the first to know if I succeed.

In the meantime, the sound at the site is deafening so you don't really want to get any closer, plus sometimes things fall, look out below.

To anyone planning on viewing the site, have no concerns with distance. When you stand at the fence you are no farther than 50 feet from the drilling platform, almost too close for comfort. I found that sitting in the car with binocs took me right up to the working platform and with the noise pretty well cut out.

Talk about hard work....every time they have to replace the drilling bit they have to pull out all of the pipe and stack it on the rig itself. The only bright side is that they can do it in segments of three thirty foot drilling pipes, so you have 90 foot pieces dangling down.

P.S. On a clear day or clear night,, the monster drilling rig is visible from the top of the Altamont Pass (sight on the Holly Sugar Tower and "turn to the right").
