Apples and pineapples. The guy was in ROTC. You know, the organization that was created to funnel people into the military. Especially the academies. Anyone with an interest in the academies knows, and that would include a ROTC cadet, much less someone like me, there is a process. And there are no scholarships. When you are given an appointment, note the word, you are accepted as an officer in training. Not yet with a commission, you get that upon graduation unless you have screwed up somewhere along the line. That is when you are appointed as a commissioned officer. Just like a recruit in basic training, there is no tuition. There is no room and board. There are no fees. There is no concept of a scholarship. They are under the authority of the military, albeit the local commander is a bit more lenient on some things.

Ali knows the details better than I. But there is just no way someone who is a ROTC cadet would not know these things. And, in fact been schooled in them many times. Because entry into the respective academy is the goal of the program. Most don't make it. But that is what the program grooms you for.
