New Fingerscan bank deal in the works . . .

This is hot off the press from the New Straits Times, Malaysia, via Worldsources Online, Inc.:

Siemens Nexdorf Information Systems and Fingerscan's Singapore office "are working together towards incorporating fingerprints into smartcards for a bank in Malaysia. According to Fingerscan's vice president for Asia Phillip G. Sibree, the company is supplying biometric identity verification original equipment manufacturing (OEM) kits to Siemens Nexdorf Malaysia together with the integration tools" for ATMs. "For the smartcard system, a specific OEM version of Fingerscan's F3 biometric identity verification device will be used."

This system would require the customer to insert a smartcard in the bank's ATM, and place a finger on a platen to confirm identity. Siemens says the company will conduct a trial run at one facility in early 1998.

NOTE: This is not the Bank Central Asia deal, which is in Indonesia, not Malaysia. This is a new one.
