I am well aware of the limitations of the approach. However, it is hardly a pointless exercise. It is sufficient to determine if a company is grossly over- or under-priced. Given the impossibility of knowing the future, this is quite enough.

BTW, while analysts numbers can be used, they are hardly necessary. Furthermore there are those analysts (e.g. Value Line) which are perhaps a little more removed from retailing pressures.
