AZD9291 beats rociletinib in the race to the T790M lung cancer market

And so the intense and hotly debated race to market in T790M lung cancer finally comes to an end.

It was won this morning by AstraZeneca after the FDA approved AZD9291 (osimertinib), three months ahead of the PDUFA date.

The drug will now be known as Tagrisso.

It’s funny really, but never have I received more heated, angry emails and messages over the last two years from investors and sell-side analysts alike, than when we called this race and said AZD9291 would be first to market.

Sorry guys, but… we told you so ;)

Actually, the really important thing is that one is now approved and hopefully, rociletinib will also soon join osimertinib on the market.

There’s nothing better for patients and oncologists than having choices, especially when it comes to cancer treatment.

One therapy would have been great, given these patients had no options after EGFR therapy other than chemotherapy, so two would be absolutely fantastic!

Two things offering some food for thought today:
What does the osimertinib label look like? What can we learn from the recent data presented at the AACR-EORTC-NCI Triple meeting in Boston?
I’ve had quite a few requests for post Triple meeting analysis following on from the Preview… unfortunately the event clashed with SITC, so coverage of the event will be limited. We do have some thoughts on the Tagrisso data though.
