The West's inability to deal with terrorism is a direct result of its colonialist past, which carved up the middle east into weak states riven with internal conflict and led by despotic rulers. The time when this could be fought without massive civilian casualties has past.

We have two choices:

1. Continue our precision approach with smart bombs and drones, respecting the innocent civilian populations in the combat zones. This will result in perpetual war as the conflict will stalemate for decades or more. Massive emigration will take place creating huge social problems around the world.

2. We can inflict massive damage to the region as we did with Japan and Germany during War II, killing millions of people and incurring higher casualties on our own side (though orders of magnitude less than WWII). This approach will require us to temporarily sell out our morality and values as we did during WWII. Later will will decry that we did such horrible things, though we will be more secure and peaceful.

I do not see a middle ground, nor do I advocate which position we should take.
