Has anyone here EVER managed to get short an NYSE stock on Datek? (or, AOL in particular?) If so, what kind of gyrations did you have to go through?

Here is what is happening: I place the order, on an uptick. I have tried both limit and market orders. The order is accepted and then shows up as an open order. Yet I see that the offer is higher than my limit price! (When I use a limit.)

Can I use the fact that my order is not represented to assume that it was not actually accepted, and then cancel the order? (Since it will NEVER fill, right?)
