We use philosophy every time we try to communicate with one another. For Hawking to claim philosophy is dead just shows that expertise in one field does not guarantee even basic competence in all areas. Rookie mistake and one that raises red flags in the area that he does have expertise. I suspect he is trying to repudiate the idea that every effect has a cause. I watched and listened to Krauss try to hoodwink people into believing that something is really nothing. They have embarrassed themselves and denigrated genuine science in the process. What a shame.
