Police have identified the University of California at Merced student — who was shot and killed after he went on a campus stabbing spree — as freshman Faisal Mohammad, according to local news reports.
Merced Couty Sheriff Vern Warnke confirmed to the Merced Sun-Star that it was Mohammad, 18, who stabbed four people before campus police found and killed him just after 8 on Wednesday morning. Authorities revealed little else, and investigators are still trying to determine a motive, he said.
The four victims — two students, a school adviser and a construction worker — suffered non-life-threatening injuries, officials said at a news conference Wednesday. Two of the victims were evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital, and classes were canceled on Wednesday and Thursday.
“Today is a sad and tragic day in UC Merced’s short history,” campus Police Chief Albert Vasquez said hours after the incident.
The bloodshed began in a second-floor classroom when Mohammad stabbed a fellow student with a fixed-blade, hunting-style knife, Warnke said. Thinking there was a fight underway, a nearby construction worker entered the classroom and was himself stabbed.
Mohammad then left the classroom, fled down a flight of stairs, exited the building and stabbed another student and then a female student adviser seated on a bench. A pair of campus police officers caught up with Mohammad and fatally shot him.
