Crews hustle to open storm-damaged Hwy. 2 for Thanksgiving

SKYKOMISH, Wash. - Repair work is beginning Friday on a main route over the Cascade Mountains that was closed due to damage from this week's powerful storm.

Crews hope to have at least one lane of Highway 2 open between Skykomish and Stevens Pass in time for the Thanksgiving travel crunch.

The huge storm that slammed Washington state on Tuesday washed away the dirt under one end of a highway bridge spanning a rain-swollen creek. Engineers assessed the damage and determined that it's just not safe to drive on now until some major work gets done.

Massive amounts of soil were carried away by the surge of flood waters under the bridge, and officials say it will cost up to $500,000 in repair work to get it fixed.

In the meantime, crews will do all they can to get at least one lane open to alternating traffic.

Highway 2 is the main route to Stevens Pass Mountain Resort ski area and Leavenworth, and the closure means anyone from the west side of the mountains would have to take Interstate 90 and take the long way around.

The east-west route carries about 5,000 vehicles each day.
