The source of modern and ancient jihadism is the same ... the basic teachings of Islam in the Koran, hadiths, and authorized biographies of the perfect Muslim, Mohammed. Mohammed was a jihadi terrorist himself and instructed his followers to follow his example.

If you go back to the ideological founders of modern Islamism (like Sayyid Qutb, Hassan al-Banna) you'll find they were inspired by classic Islamic teachings and were opposed to modern concepts like civil rights (for women and non-Muslims), democracy, and secular governments. It was the introduction of such western non-Islamic things into the Muslim world that really got them mad. Read the Looming Tower. Why do you think ISIS formed a caliphate (previously called for by the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda)? They intend to reject all the modern governments in the ME and replace them with a divinely approved caliph, who will lead the Muslim world in holy war against the non-Muslims just as Mohammed and the early caliphs did.
