Craig and All,
VERY interesting find today. I was reading a magazine called SMS, or Storage Management Solutions (November issue). This magazine, as you can infer from the title, is targeted at the networking professional with a focus on finding enterprise storage solutions. Anyway, there is a great article in this issue by Carla Kennedy! This really is an outstanding article- I wish it were in Information Week or BYTE instead.

Here's the gist"
"The Current State of the Enterprise" - in this section Carla describes the motivation for FC from a user needs perspective.

"Fibre Channel: A Storage/Server/Workstation Fabric Interconnect"- here she talks about fibre channel networking. Here's some info that I didn't know concerning the Japanese network. I knew it was big, but I didn't really understand the scope. She describes the customer as "...one of the world's leading consumer and industrial goods manufacturers." The FC network- which is the world's largest- connects 800 IBM and SGI workstations using 40 Gigworks switches. Currently the network has an aggregate bandwidth of over 300 Gb. The final network (after stage two) will connect 1800 workstations! The customer is using CATIA, which is a CAD/CAM system to design its products. File sizes are on the order of 5-10 MB, with full models on the order of 80-100 Mb. GE and ATM simply cannot scale to the size of this network.

"Fibre Channel Server-storage Interconnect"- talks about using Gigworks at the Univ. of Calif. for x-ray imaging- Reducing file transfer times from 90 seconds to 8 seconds.

"Where the Enterprise is Headed"- Gives a huge plug to EDS's PIPE architecture, which stands for Primary Integrated Platform Environment. I find the plug for EDS fascinating and heartening!!

"New Generation Fabrics Yield Streamlined Architecture"- talks about the need for scaleable solutions and rapidly congesting networks.

"A Fibre Channel Overview"- talks about why FC is superior to ATM in the LAN. Also talks about Intermix FC switches like GWII. Intermix means possessing both Class 1, and Class 2/3 capability in one switch and how this intermix capability optimizes LAN performance (as compared to a solely Class 1 or solely Class 2/3 switch)

Note: there is also a good FC article in this magazine by a McData VP.

I haven't searched the 'net for this magazine yet (probably should have before now!). Here's some contact information if you're interested in contacting the magazine directly-
