I get all that but there's also a need to be concerned about the level of hate now deployed in the Republican race. Without serious critique from other contenders. One wonders just how much divisiveness our polity can handle. What happens to passionate Trump supporters if he gets the Republican nomination, continues to spew this hate, and loses dramatically (as we all think) in the general. After this level of nation wide legitimizing in the Republican race, I don't see them going away quietly.

And it's interesting to see that Trump now has the notion of a third party run on the table again with the word that large chunks of the Republican establishment are working to coordinate efforts to keep him from winning the election.

It's hard to imagine a serious Father Couglin moment without the unemployment statistics of the depression, but we may well be going there. Over fears among some whites of an ever larger multicultural society.
