It's hard to imagine a serious Father Couglin moment without the unemployment statistics of the depression, but we may well be going there.

The problem is that the official unemployment rate understates real unemployment and, especially, underemployment. And as the population ages, even if a lot of older people are employed, they are employed in low paying jobs and they don't have much financial security. Which leads to more fearfulness. Which favors the Rs, unless there is an FDR lurking in the background somewhere that I don't know about. There could be one, of course. In 1927-28, I don't think anyone thought that Franklin Roosevelt would become FDR, if you grok that.
