>>BTW, the recent 12/8/97 issue of LanTimes, at page 60, makes the interesting point that NT 5.0 increased in size over NT 4.0 by about 14 million lines of _new_ code in about 500 days with about 400 developers. I think that works out to on the order of one line per man-minute. The question the article raises is how complete quality control can have been.<<
Lest you forget Charles that this is a beta product, unless I missed something. Are we at the point where we are checking the qa on beta?
I also am miffed at your assertion that linux, os/2 and everything else will begin to take market share from Windows. Most seasoned observors would concede that virtually all the products you mentioned have been summarily dispatched by Windows and they've all lost momentum. They've been knocked out, save for Solaris. And Solaris is losing share (to Windows!!) in Workstations and is now being cornered into the high end server space where volumes are small, but dollars high. Can you provide any facts to support your astonishing claim that those bloodied systems will suddenly raise from the dead and start taking market share from Windows? Will they be cheaper? Will they offer more software applications?
As for the NC, isn't it like waiting for Godot? I mean 97 was supposed to be THE year of the NC. Question: Has anyone actually encountered one of these things? Well, maybe next year, but even your comrade Mr. Ellison won't enlighten us-after all, since his stock was pummeled, he hasn't been talking alot. |
