michael: The JPC selected standard DMT line code from Alcatel. The idea behind a standard is interoperability, which drives equipment costs down. Interoperability also allows the JPC to select multiple vendors.

AMTX and Alcatel were working on the interoperability of their solutions. Westell gets to use the AMTX DMT solution in the TI, MOT and LSI chips. To my knowledge Westell modems are still in trial with Ameritech. To my knowledge Ameritech is still evalutating NGDLC/DLC systems.

Now let's compare the JPC standard DMT line code contracts with a non-standard CAP line code, ala Bell Atlantic. Telechoice said it best:

.. Bell Atlantic did note that as the standards get set in the CAP arena, it is possible that consumers might buy their own modems to plug into the Westell/DSC central office/DLC solution. However, TeleChoice believes this is not likely to happen much in the next few years, if at all within the four year contract period, due to the lack of depth of most standards in the DSL arena...

telechoice.com.

My point in post 8543 is a contract should be taken on face value. At this point in time Westell isn't included in the JPC contract, but then again Westell has 2 or 3 unannounced contracts. I want to see that production level DSLAM 1Q98. Once the DSLAM arrives, maybe we will see 1 or 2 contracts announced. I don't see any reason for the JPC to announce contracts with Westell or Lucent, until their DSLAM is ready... until later.
