If your making a coherent relevant point I don't get it.

You are fine with people having sawed off shotguns in their home, but want things to be more like the 50s in terms of guns (what does that even mean?)

In the 50s, guns ownership was generally less regulated. AR-15s didn't even exist yet (edit apparently they did exist in limited numbers in the late 50s), but would have been legal if they did. People could legally own military semi-auto rifles (the M1 Garand for most of the 50s), Concealed carry was more regulated. Guns were less common. Open carry of them was in many places more common. Murder rates were lower but going up (as opposed to now where they have been going down since 1980, but are higher then the 50s). IS that the combination your looking for? The only thing I'd support out of that combination is gun ownership being less regulated (including owning the current military rifle of the day), and a lower murder rate. The other stuff (murder rate going up, concealed carry being more restricted) is negative compared to today.

In any case I'm not sure what all that has to do with the issue of modifying semi-autos, with so called "assault weapons" being esp. dangerous and deserving of bans.

If a guy was found to have a gun he'd be arrested.

Generally no. Although carrying concealed could get him in trouble in many jurisdictions including ones that are just fine with it now.
