Thanks for the comparison. That looks like a handy site, the CPU Mark per $ too.

I had been thinking of building an 8 core version with a modern MB. However, this 6 core machine looks to have spoiled me for that. I like the low power usage a 95 watts the whole machine draws about 160 watts on full tilt.

I have been looking at second hand Opertons, and maybe building a workstation with maybe 32 or even 48 cores. It can be run up with Ubuntu rather then windows server, any you can just use virtualization from there. There seems to be a plentiful supply of Opertons and 12 cores are not that expensive. Four of those plus a humongous amount of cheap RAM should be able to run all sorts of stuff.

To be honest, I just love trailing edge technology. Its less crowded and there are always lots of people wishing to dump it.

Here that Opteron type of configuration I am thinking of
http://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/nfo/AMD_G34.cfm?pg=MOBO

Whats available there days if you buy new ready made....
.
4x AMD Opteron 6274 16-Core 2.2GHz 115W Processors
Supermicro H8QGi-F Motherboard

pugetsystems.com

Thinking of making a similar type of configuration. but cheaper then the asking price for that machine.
