Virginia climate change panel releases report

By The Associated Press, News@WCYB.com

POSTED: 12:21 PM Dec 21 2015

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has released a report by a climate change commission and established a three-year target for state government to use solar power to meet 8 percent of its energy needs.

The report released Monday by the widely diverse climate panel recommended five steps to address climate change in Virginia, where coastal communities like Norfolk are among the most threatened by rising seas in the nation.

The top recommendations include the creation of a climate change and resilience resource center to serve as a clearinghouse on climate change. Other recommendations would establish a renewable energy target for state agencies and leveraging of federal funding to make coastal communities more resistant to rising seas.

McAuliffe's proposal calls for solar projects to be built on state land.
