This is fabulous! I always hear about 'good' and 'bad' ozone. The 'good' is the ozone in the stratosphere, while the 'bad' is the ozone in the troposphere. As noted in the article, this lightning serves as the largest natural source of ozone formation in the troposphere.

The photolysis of tropospheric ozone leads to the production of the hydroxyl radical. The hydroxyl radical cleans and oxidizes the atmosphere. In other words, the atmosphere would be highly acidic without it. Tropospheric ozone is vital. Of course, too much tropospheric ozone is pollution, but I just say want to give perspective.
