Gene - Re: "hat's your take on Intel's acknowledgment that they
may drop Slot 1?"

You are demonstrating the ability to ignore what Intel said and extrapolate to what you "think" they said.

Intel NEVER said anything about dropping Slot 1.

The said they may seek an additional lower cost package for the dumbed-down Pentium II for cheaper sub $1,000 PCs.

They will reduce the cost, with attendant reduced performance, to make sure that the Pentium II commands a dominant share of the low cost computers. They seem to be very flexible these days and not wedded to some religious attachment to Slot 1.

Slot 1 will continue for higher performance Desktop applications and will be joined by Slot 2 for VERY high performance Workstation and Server Platforms - with 440BX and 440NX chip sets.

Someday there will probably be a slot 3, 4 and 5.

Do you mourn the loss of the slot 4 486 socket interface?

I thought not.
