I personally recall USSR vessels, including subs and aircraft playing chickie with us in the Mediterranean. So many times it was almost comical. So many times and so many ways, but they never launched a missile or rocket within range of us.

I don't mean to downplay the seriousness of the incidents because a simple mistake could cause all hell to break out. I recall a sub surfaced right next the ship I was on. I mean within feet. Very dangerous. The sub crew filed out on deck and stood in formation. Being Marines we threw cans of tuna at them laughing as they refused the break formation. Then the guys started rolling up Playboy magazines and tossing them, with great sacrifice. One landed and opened up and the formation broke and they all scrambled for the magazines much to the dismay of the officer. I am sure the officer confiscated at least one of the publications for himself. They drifted about a hundred yards from us and two US subs surfaced on each side of it and guided it out of the convoy.

Many other stories.
