It was Mike Burry, he used to post on here in the old days. Quite a stock picker, brilliant guy. He quit posting when he started a fund about 2001, I believe.
Movie was good, book was better.
Mike was one of the first to figure it out and take action, others came later, Paulson, Karl Bass, Merideth Whitney etc. Most of them only after hearing about Mikes "crazy bet" against housing. I never met him but wish I had. There were many brilliant people on SI in the 90's I wish I paid more attention too or made the effort to meet. All gone now with a few exceptions SI is not what is was in its early days.

Regarding the permabears on the housing blog betting on a depression, well one day they may be right but I doubt in our life time. When housing crashed 50% or more the hardest thing is to see any upside, especially if you are under water personally on your own house or houses. This is where one or two friends or blog buddies like Mike Burry are worth their weight in gold. Guys like that remind me of Kipling's Poem

"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming you ..."
